Governor Introductions

Philip Boyes -Chair - Co-opted Governor

I have been a governor at Barlby CP School since March 2014. I have grown my role to include several committees and I’m the health & safety governor. In September 2021 I became chair of governors and now lead the governing body. I have a passion for realising the potential in people and truly believe in giving children the best possible educational start. My role as chair is to support the whole school and ensure decisions made are in the best interest of the school community.

I’m a chartered civil engineer and understand the challenges of delivering projects on limited budgets, leading teams and implementing change in the workplace.

Geoff Stockill - Vice Chair -LA Governor

Hi. I am Geoff Stockill and I was co-opted as a Governor in October 2015. I am a Chartered Accountant working part time at the University of York and running my own locally-based practice. I have experience in a number of sectors including public and charity/not for profit as well as varied commercial businesses. I have since changed my role and I am now the Local Authority Governor.

My daughter attended and thoroughly enjoyed the school , before moving on to High School and more recently college and university. For a number of years I was involved with the Friends of Barlby CP School, most latterly as Chair. Following my daughter’s departure from the school I wished to continue supporting the school and applied for the role of Governor. I believe that nursery/primary school education plays a fundamental role in providing, along with parents, a solid grounding for children to develop. It is important to “get it right, first time” – a strong bond between the pupils, parents, teachers and the governors can help achieve this.

Sarah Owen - Staff Governor

I have worked at Barlby Community Primary School since January 2004; and I have taught in the Early Years Foundation Stage for several years and now work in KS1. I have been a staff governor since July 2009. I thoroughly enjoy the daily surprises and challenges teaching after all this time can still bring. I revel in sharing learning with our children; as they are so eager to learn.

I have found being a staff governor can be both challenging and rewarding and presents an excellent opportunity to contribute to the decisions that are made by the governing body as well as to build strong links between the governing body and the staff of the school.

Beverley Dowdy -Co-opted Governor

My name is Beverley Dowdy and I have been appointed as a Co-opted Governor.  I currently work as a support worker for a UK based charity but prior to this I worked in a primary school setting as a Teaching Assistant with various roles including working with SEN children and supporting the SENCO.  I was also on the Governing Body.

I hope my previous skills, experience along with my availability to provide support will be of benefit to the Governing board of Barlby Community Primary School.  I am married and have two girls, Grace and Rosie and two poodles.

 Solar Richmond - Co-opted Governor

I  started at Barlby Primary School as a Teaching Assistant in September 2017 and put myself forward for the co-opted staff governor which has been accepted.  Although I am new to the school I am not new to school governance, having previously served 7 years as a parent governor, vice chair and chair at my children's primary school.

I have always found governance challenging but rewarding and I am delighted to be working with the school and it's governors to ensure high standards of achievement for all children.

Joanna Millican-Delve - Parent Governor

I have been a Parent Governor at Barlby since September 2017. My son attended the school and is now at Fulford School, York and my daughter is still at the school. In my usual day job I work for the MOD. I really enjoy being a governor at the school you get to be involved in decision making and holding the school to account . Being a Parent Governor you get to see things from both perspectives, the school's and as a parent. I have a real passion for wanting to help our future generation to thrive and grow and it is the reason why I decided to become a governor. I have also gained new skills and experiences from my role as governor.

Peter Jones - Parent Governor

I was selected to be a Parent governor in Jan 2023, having a child at Barlby CP school. With a background and interest in education and development I felt I had a breath of experience to help support the school through the parent Governor Role. Currently working for the MOD, I have recently finished work within Apprenticeship Quality assurance and am now working in a further assurance role, focusing on Policy and Contractorisations. Responsible for ensuring compliance in line with financial and quality frameworks, these roles I feel have given me a good understanding both Education, policy and compliance.

Being able to support the school in its delivery of its vision, ethos and strategic direction is going to be extremely rewarding, I am proud to be setting an example for my child, giving back to the school that is helping in the early years of her education.

Laura Clark - Co-opted Governor

I am Laura Clark, I was lucky enough to became a co-opted Governor for Barlby Community Primary school in 2017. I have a daughter and a son at this school who love it so much that I had to get involved in supporting the school.

I have a background which involves investigating and presenting a myriad of complex and protracted criminal cases all over the world, dealing with a variety of people. I have a fundamental belief in doing the right thing. I relish the thought of a challenge getting stuck in at every opportunity. I intend to do my best within the governing body for the benefit of the school.

Caroline Karbani - Parent Governor

My name is Caroline Karbani and I became an elected governor in December 2020. I have 2 very energetic boys who attend the school and like every parent, I would like the best for my children. I am very aware of the need for a positive learning experience whilst also developing confident and valued individuals. This can only be achieved within a happy, safe and secure environment to give all children the platform to become the best that they can be. I feel very privileged to be able to play a key part in a school which has this aim and am keen to support its future success.

I have 14 years of management experience leading teams of planners in providing an emergency service across the Yorkshire area. Being able to listen to others whilst challenging decisions/working practices within the constraints of policies and regulations became an integral part of this role and I am keen to be able to utilise these skills for the benefit of the school.

Ian McKenzie - Parent Governor

I became a parent governor because I have two children now within the school and they really enjoy their school days. I wish to help and support the school in giving the children of the local community the best education possible. As someone who has grown up in Barlby and attended the primary school myself, I want to give back to a school which has a long tradition of community involvement. I have a personal interest in SEND as well as experience in complex policies and procedures.

Stephen Flatman - Co-opted Governor

Hi! I’m Stephen Flatman. I was co-opted as a governor in December 2020, and now that we can get into school again, I’m eager to get to know Barlby much better. I teach in another local primary school where I was previously a staff governor there for many years, and I'm looking forward to bringing some of that experience to Barlby CP School, helping everyone who makes it such a fantastic place to learn.

I love reading stories, particularly by Roald Dahl because of his gruesome baddies, and I really enjoy music too; I play in a ceilidh band and find lots of other opportunities to play my violin or guitar. I also enjoy cycling and escape rooms, and at home, I look after a hamster named Dr Dylan Fluffington, the Mayor of Hamsterdam!

Geoff McConnell - Parent Governor

I have worked as a doctor in the NHS for almost 11 years, the last 4 of which as a GP in the local area.  I firmly believe that children’s health and welfare is vitally important in giving them the best start towards a successful future.  The Infant and Junior stages of school should provide a happy, safe and rewarding environment, where the interests and skills of the children are nurtured and encouraged.   If our children are well supported and enthused by their primary school education, I believe that they will progress on to secondary school and their life beyond with the determination, skills and confidence they need to succeed in whatever they choose.

I am delighted to have been elected to serve Barlby Community Primary School as a Governor as I already have 2 children at the school and another due to start in 2023. I truly hope I will be able to support the school community to help ensure that every child, and their family, can get the very best from the time spent at the school.

AJ Durling - Co-opted Governor

"I became a parent governor in September 2017, and a co-opt governor in 2021. All three of my children have been through Barlby CP, and we have loved the support and sense of community that it brings. Being both a parent and a governor gives a brilliant perspective on the work of the school, and it is hugely rewarding to be able to contribute in some small way to those efforts.

In my day job, a work in cyber security for a finance house in Leeds. I spend my free time with my wife, our three children, and two Labradors. I can make a pretty reasonable sound on a piano, and can sometimes find a chord or two on a guitar. I can mostly be found wearing odd socks."
