French

Our French curriculum is designed with the following aims in mind:

Intent

  • For children to enjoy learning and speaking another language 

  • For children to be able to speak French in a range of contexts 

  • Children will be able to understand written and spoken French, responding accurately with confidence 

  • Pronunciation will be accurate

Implementation

  • The focus for all French teaching will be developing practical communication, appropriate to age and experience

  • Children are given regular opportunity to listen to French, including when it is spoken by native speakers

  • They will explore the language, developing intonation and pronunciation, through speaking, writing and singing 

  • They will be taught to speak in pairs, groups and in front of others, reflecting their growing confidence

  • Children will develop an increasingly broad vocabulary

  • They will appreciate the difference in language structure from English, for example feminine and masculine form and verb endings

Impact

The impact will be seen through: 

  • An enjoyment of practical communication in French

  • Confidence in reading, writing and particularly speaking in French

  • Children communicate clearly in French in a range of contexts

  • Accurate pronunciation
